Yesterday it was announced that Linda Smith had died of ovarian cancer aged 48.
I was such a huge fan of Linda's without even realising it... If you had asked me to name my comic heroes she may not have made the list on every occasion, not because she didn't deserve to be at the top of that list, but because she was so understated and underexposed. I was deeply shocked and saddened upon hearing the news of her passing.
The work of hers which I was most familiar with was her time with Radio 4 both on her own shows and on panels such as "The News Quiz". She also appeared regularly in the papers with her perfectly judged columns and was adept at puncturing pomposity wherever she saw it... and she saw it everywhere. Her wit and skill with wordplay were unrivalled and she leaves a gaping hole in our society that will not be quickly filled.
I hope that Linda realised the inspiration that she was to many people in this country and that she was aware of the huge amount of joy and mirth that she spread.
May she rest in peace.
